After a bit of a break from the pet photography blog circle to deal with some technical issues and help out with some rescue stuff, I’m back this week and the theme is Windows. I often think of the old proverb “the eyes are the windows to the soul” when photographing pets. I love to capture direct eye contact with my subjects in order to feel the silent communication of their character through their gaze.
I met Ruka only briefly at Pet-a-Palooza last weekend. I was there to help at the Bully Buddies Rescue Society booth and to promote the mini sessions I’ll be doing for them at the end of the month. See the Dog Days of Summer Mini Sessions page for more information. I had my camera with me just in case but it was tucked away until I saw miss Ruka. One look at those eyes and I jumped up to capture this old gal’s wise face as she paused for a brief rest under our shady tent. She was incredibly soft and so mellow. Her person was saying that she had been letting them know it was her time to go, and I’ve since learned that she passed the following day. Can you catch a glimpse of her gentle soul through these beautiful windows?
Let my soul smile through my heart and my heart smile through my eyes, that I may scatter rich smiles in sad hearts.

Next up in the blog circle let’s peek through the window of Nashville Pet Photographer, Kelly Coyle.
I am sure that Ruka’s parents will treasure this image for always. Lovely job!
Melissa, I completely agree with “the eyes are the windows to the soul” proverb. You captured Ruka beautifully. From her eyes alone, I can see how gentle and sensitive she was. Rest in peace, Ruka.
Oh my gawsh, that’s so sad. What a beautiful girl. I cannot believe she was gone the next day. Our dogs don’t live long enough.
